Kintsugi 🍵 in progress
The month-long merge sprint began in Kintsugi🍵 at the beginning of November! Kintsugi specs and milestones / plans have been released and now the customer teams are deep in the sprint with the goal of starting a permanent testnet in the first week of December.
The Kintsugi specifications contain all findings and minor adjustments from the amphora interop. So the Kintsugi Sprint in November is an attempt to (1) integrate the new change set and (2) refine and produce the merge implementations. Kintsugi will culminate in the rollout of a persistent, multi-client testnet that will run over the December vacation and serve as the basis for the merge plans drawn up in January.
Customer teams are currently working on milestones – developing functions, running tests and conducting initial interop experiments with other customers. In addition, a Merge-Devnet will be started every week this month – merge-devnet-0 is the newest.
If you are interested in testing the merge software, keep an eye out for client releases and Testnet instructions. We hope that many in the community will get to grips with the Kintsugi testnet after it launched in the first week of December.
Once this testnet has started, the relevant EIPs and specifications will transition to a last call state where teams and individuals will monitor the change set one last time before it is frozen. After that, the public proof-of-work and clique testnets will go through the merge transition in the New Year as our teams complete the tests and prepare for the mainnet launch.
Upgrade to Arrow Glacier
Although Finalized is mostly concerned with the consensus layer of Ethereum, The upcoming (small) upgrade to the current proof-of-work chain is critical for users running validators. Around December 8, 2021, Arrow Glacier will defuse the difficulty bomb and postpone it for several months. For more information about the upgrade and its associated client releases, see the Arrow Glacier announcement.
When you run validators, Please update your “eth1 endpoint” (PoW node) before Wednesday, December 5th, 2021 to take into account the variable block times. This is supposed to be the last bomb of difficulty before the merge 🚀
