Ethereum messaging for the lots (together with dads) – by way of infographic

When I first started evangelizing bitcoin and blockchain technology in 2012, my father was a tough sell. There was the usual skepticism and the typical contrasts of “what’s the point?”, “what can you do with it?” and “what the heck is cryptography?” At the time, my pitch wasn’t refined and the learning tools just weren’t quite there yet… but honestly I tend to think he didn’t get it because he just isn’t technical and doesn’t adopt early technology.

I gently persisted, and finally he came to. By the end of 2012 he had secured a nice stash of coins and as the price went up many fold I made sure he had a growing ear for future opportunities that might arise.

Now he has not decided to buy bitcoins because he finally understood the technology. In fact, years later, I’m still not sure if he understood much of Bitcoin in detail or delved into the potential impact of blockchain technology on offers. When Ethereum first came out he certainly didn’t understand the concept and why I decided in late 2013 to drop everything and risk a significant amount of capital to start the project with my then co-founders Vitalik, Mihai and Charles and eventually the rest of the company to start the founding team as it exists today.

Bitcoin is complex to explain, Ethereum takes it a few notches higher. It’s not rocket science, but it sure can feel like it to a lot of people. Outrageous terms like smart contracts, smart property or dapps can be off-putting to the masses. Even increasingly common terms or words such as “cryptocurrency” or “distributed ledger system” may still be unfamiliar to many. Let’s be honest. This technology is not easy for the majority to understand and the messages need to be continually refined and crafted to change that.

Rightly so, the focus and current goal of Ethereum is to put the tools in the hands of developers and show them how to create the products that end users will ultimately appreciate. Less time and resources have been spent explaining Ethereum to consumers, businesses, and institutions.

With weekly announcements of “blockchain integrations” (see NASDAQ, IBM, Honduran government and countless others) and friendly legislative proposals from countries like Canada, there is obviously increased interest from many sectors, and as more integration projects hit the news, more and more Interest is being sparked by organizations that don’t want to be left behind.

Explain complex ideas

So how do we bring Ethereum and complex ideas in general to the general public? Whether it’s a company trying to educate investors about new innovations or an educator teaching a challenging subject in a short amount of time, The problem is how to effectively simplify a wealth of mostly technical information and present it in an engaging and informative way.

One answer is infographics. Here are some advantages of this medium

  1. Infographics are more eye-catching than printed words because they typically combine images, colors, and content that naturally draws attention and appeals to those with shorter attention spans.
  2. Infographics are great for sharing on the web using the embed code and perfect for sharing on social media
  3. If visually appealing with uniform colors, shapes. Messages and logo, they provide an effective means of brand awareness

Bellow is the concept of the first general infographic for Ethereum designed for the masses. I’ll let it speak for itself and welcome feedback and questions as to why we framed the message the way we did, or why certain terms or ideas were left out. Please don’t hesitate to share this and help spread the word across the internet.

This is the first of several proposed infographics. The next will focus more on Ethereum use cases for different sectors, then one for the more tech-savvy.

I’m missing Father’s Day with my dad (and my brother’s first Father’s Day) to be in Switzerland for Ethereum business. However, I did see my father this week and felt some accomplishment when, after showing him the infographic, he told me, “I finally have an idea of what Ethereum is and the potential it has. What is all this talk about Bitcoin now?”

Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there on Ethereum
