Homestead publication

Update: We released version 1.3.5 including network hotfix for Homestead 1.3.4.

Ethereum development began in December 2013 when two developers and a college dropout decided to put their heads together and create this amazing piece of technology. We were later joined from many like-minded people. Our first Proof of Concept (PoC) came on February 1st, 2014. When we started our crowdsale on July 23rd, we were at PoC 5 with an almost complete protocol and had achieved compatibility between multiple clients. The team was excited when we got our first million and our second and our third and so on. It was crazy! Believing that we could deliver the Ethereum platform was one thing, but seeing others believe in it and want to participate in it was incredibly inspiring.

A little later in October 2014, Gav and I were on the train to Zurich Airport when we thought an Ethereum conference would be absolutely awesome and decided to hold it in November of the same year. It was a bit hectic for those who organized it (thanks Aeron, Christian & Jason!) but we made it as we were determined to host our first internal developer conference, DEVcon0.

When January 2015 arrived, we all knew that this would be the year that we would launch our beta version of Ethereum. Our PoC series ended on March 5th with the PoC 9 hackathon and on July 30th 2015 we successfully launched Frontier. Miners from all over the world powered up their mining rigs, users cheered on their nodes and the network came alive. It worked; no hiccups, no issues, and from a developer’s perspective, the release couldn’t have gone smoother. In the months that followed, our team and community demonstrated their potential and true awesomeness in tackling network issues and solving two consensus failures together.

We found it extremely important to clearly communicate our opinion on the security of the network to our users. Today we are incredibly proud to announce that we are finally ready to remove the crossed out word “safe” from our website to enter a new phase: Homestead. The Homestead block will be 1,150,000 for the main network, meaning the homestead transition will be around noon on pi day and the homestead block for the morden network 494,000.

What is Homestead?

Homestead is the second major release of the Ethereum platform, which includes several protocol changes and a network change that gives us the opportunity to make more network upgrades:

  • EIP-2 Hardfork changes to the main homestead
  • EIP-7 Hardfork EVM update: DELEGATECALL
  • EIP-8 devp2p forward compatibility

customer approvals

That walk version of Ethereum (geth) for Homestead Version 1.3.4 Release 1.3.5 and includes the protocol and network changes mentioned above. After the release of Homestead, the Go team will also be coming with the shortly 1.4 version, this is our big feature release and involves months of work. The reason for separating Homestead and our feature release is to keep the Homestead release changes to a bare minimum and to make debugging easier when needed.

That C++ version of Ethereum (eth) for Homestead Version 1.2.0. Aside from the protocol and network changes, it also tries to be as compatible with Geth as possible. You can already use Mist and Geth Attach with an eth node running in the background. In the next few weeks we will be aligning key management with geth. The EVM’s new DELEGATECALL feature will be usable in Solidity for library calls (not yet released). For more details, please refer to Release Notes.

What’s next

Over the next few weeks, the teams will come together to pave the way for future development of both the Ethereum protocol and a roadmap for the clients and sub-protocols like Swarm and Whisper. Once we have a clear picture of the work ahead, we will provide details in another blog post.

For more information on Ethereum, Homestead and running one of the Ethereum clients, see Homestead documentation project and let’s prepare the next phase of Ethereum together.
