The director of Suicide Squad, James Gunn, reveals which member of the super villain team is the most powerful and that is exactly what the audience expects.
DCEU returned with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad – an action-packed ensemble film filled to the brim with some of DC Comics’ most colorful supervillains, all kept on leash by Amanda Waller. Although they were all highly skilled individuals, they varied greatly in terms of their power.
Director James Gunn recently confirmed the most powerful member of a watch party that anyone who’s seen the movie would probably have guessed. Gunn stated, “Yes, Polkadot Man is the most powerful, but I would probably make him my second choice.”
Polka-Dot Man, played by David Dastmalchian, had the ability to fire point projectiles with the help of his gauntlets. They are able to melt down their target and harm Starro where King Shark and Bloodsport couldn’t. As polka dot man Bloodsport explained in the film, he acquired his powers as a child after being exposed to a virus from another dimension. It wasn’t an accident, it was the result of his mother – a STAR Labs scientist – trying to create superheroes through dangerous experiments on her own children.
Although he was one of the few subjects who survived his mother’s experiments, the ordeal left him deeply traumatized. In The Suicide Squad, Polka-Dot Man has been shown to sense his mother in everyone, including the giant Starro, which gives him the urge to kill. Oddly enough, it also lends itself to some of the more comedic moments in the film.
Dastmalchian previously discussed its connection to the character, describing Polka-Dot Man as the most ridiculous DC it has to offer. However, the actor felt personally connected to him due to a physical condition that Gunn was unaware of at the time. “As a kid I was teased and given nicknames, and as an adult it made fun of me for having those big, blotchy spots on my body,” Dastmalchian previously explained. “When I was cast as the Polka Dot Man, I finally took on my Polka Dots. I’m proud of them now and I’ve turned my once really crippling insecurity into something I think makes’ me unique and makes me different. “
Gunn was available for many questions from the audience during the Suicide Squad Watch Party, confirming other details such as the real villain of the DCEU movie and the apparent survival of a Suicide Squad character who may have perished with some of the more unfortunate members of the team.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad is currently in theaters.
