James Gunn shared close-ups of the makeup and prostheses used to put together Polka-Dot Man’s final look for The Suicide Squad.
It’s been a month The suicide squad in theaters, and director James Gunn is still sitting behind the scenes with a treasure trove of photos and videos. He recently revealed a few pictures on his social media account of Gunn posing with David Dastmalchian while the actor is doing his first makeup test for a polka dot man scene in the film.
The photos offer a close-up of the extraordinary makeup and prostheses used to get the look of Polka-Dot Man when he experienced a “rash” in The Suicide Squad. Dastmalchian is hardly recognizable in the pictures, a whole series of prostheses are attached to his face, which even glow in the dark and provide the colorful look that is necessary for his character.
Gunn revealed that these pictures were taken during her first makeup test for the “extreme polka dot disease,” which fans of The Suicide Squad will remember. In the film, fans see the makeup in action for the first time when Polka-Dot Man arrives on Corto Maltese for an undercover operation along with Idris Elbas Bloodsport, John Cena’s Peacemaker, King Shark by Sylvester Stallone, and Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2.
The makeup inspiration came from actor Lon Chaney, best known for his role in The Phantom of the Opera from 1925, Boris Karloff, known for his portrayal of Frankenstein, and Universal Monsters, according to Gunn’s tweet. A fan of her work, Dastmalchian was “overwhelmed by emotion” when he found out he should be her “modern embodiment” and began to cry when he first saw his polka dot man look.
Since this was only the first trial, Gunn revealed that many “makeup changes were made” afterwards. The team experimented with the look and added prostheses to create the glowing effect. Gunn praised her work, not only for a wonderful look for Polka-Dot Man, but also for “all the prostheses” used for the various characters that are part of The Suicide Squad.
It seems like Polka-Dot Man is one of Gunn’s favorite characters from the movie. In a previous question-and-answer session on Twitter, Gunn revealed that the character’s costume is actually his favorite in the film.
The white outfit with multicolored polka dots, along with a red belt and gladiator glasses, complemented the Polka-Dot Man’s personality perfectly. In fact, it’s similar to the costume the character wears in the comics, and Gunn had previously praised the costume department for nailing the look.
The suicide squad is shown in theaters.
