NBC has decided to cancel Ellen’s Game of Games, starring Ellen DeGeneres, after four seasons. DeGeneres is also ending her self-titled talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, which is ending after 19 seasons. The last new episode of Ellen’s Game of Games aired in May 2021. A reason for the cancellation of Ellen’s Game of Games was not given, although she recently came under fire for promoting a toxic work environment. The Hollywood Reporter notes that Game of Games ratings have declined over the past season, especially when it was moved to Sunday nights.
“When you’re a creative person, you need to be constantly challenged — and as great as this show is and as much fun as it is, it just isn’t a challenge anymore,” DeGeneres told THR after news of the end of her talk show Broke.
“Even though all good things must come to an end, you still have hope that really great things never come to an end,” Warner Bros. Unscripted TV President Mike Darnell said of The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He added that the series is “an absolute phenomenon” and presents itself as “the go-to place for superstars and incredible, heartfelt human-interest stories.”
A BuzzFeed news report detailed the toxic workplace, which some current and former employees blamed. DeGeneres responded to the criticism by removing executives and issuing a personal apology early in the show’s 18th season. “I have learned that things happen here that should never have happened. I take this very seriously. And I want to say that the people affected are so sorry,” DeGeneres said.
