The ETH in Mellieha is the latest in a long line of NFT experiments aimed at challenging traditional values and concepts of art and ownership. This particular project is being advised by Mamo TCV Advocates, one of Malta’s leading law firms.
The heart of the ETH in Mellieha is an oil painting that no longer exists
Local artist Debbie Bonello was commissioned to create an oil painting of a car with ETH on its license plate. After the painting was finished, it was to be burned during a celebratory bonfire event attended by Bonello’s friends and family, as well as members of the local and national Maltese government.
Prior to the ceremonial destruction of the painting and all accompanying sketches, it was digitized by photographer Matthew Mirabelli and minted as an NFT. This NFT will now be auctioned off to the highest bidder under Maltese law, along with the legal ownership rights to the actual ETH license plate.
The involvement of Mamo TCV Advocates is key to the project
Although NFTs bundled with rights to assets have been undertaken before, ETH in Mellieha made efforts to ensure this project was of impeccable legality by bringing in one of Malta’s leading law firms to draft the terms and conditions and monitor the eventual transmission.
Mamo TCV, through its collaboration with Transport Malta, has confirmed that anyone who wins the auction will be entitled to ownership of the customized number plate, regardless of whether they own a car and/or are a resident of Malta themselves.
The laws and culture of the country of Malta made ETH in Mellieha possible
Malta’s status as the “Blockchain Hub of Europe” has made projects like the ETH in Mellieha possible. Every strand of this project is of Maltese origin, from the artist of the painting himself to the legal terms overseen by Mamo TCV. A documentary was also made by the Maltese videographer Eric Bartolo.
Once again, Malta is at the center of the burgeoning crypto sphere, which will undoubtedly not be the last either. The call for “ETH in Mellieha” starts on February 2, 2022 at 16:00 UTC on Opensea. More information about the project can be found on the website.
