Suicide Squad star David Dastmalchian reveals he had early eyes on Peacemaker and enthusiastically praises the HBO Max spinoff series.
David Dastmalchian, who played Polka-Dot Man in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, praises the new spinoff series peacemaker. The upcoming show, centered around John Cena’s character of the same name, will be created, written and heavily directed by Gunn, who will serve as showrunner for the DC Extended Universe series. Peacemaker will air its first three episodes on HBO Max on January 13, while the rest of the first season will be released weekly.
Cena’s Peacemaker debuted alongside Dastmalchian’s Polka-Dot Man in Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot of David Ayer’s poorly received 2016 film Suicide Squad. While both characters proved popular with fans, the director immediately saw potential in the former, a character , who fights for peace with any amount of heinous violence. Though he’s shot and left for dead in the final act of The Suicide Squad, a post-credits scene shows him recovering from his injuries under the watchful eye of Amanda Waller’s team and building this spin-off series that goes to had already been shot by that time the film was released.

As early reactions pour in from those who watched Peacemaker early, Cena’s former castmate offers a particularly glowing review. Dastmalchian takes to Twitter with his initial reaction, making heavy use of the caps lock key to assure his followers that they won’t be disappointed with what Gunn & Co. have invented. He also gives special shoutouts to two members of the supporting cast: Jennifer Holland, who plays Waller’s assistant Emilia Harcourt; and Steve Agee, who plays Belle Reve prison guard John Economos. While fans might not expect anyone from the original film to be overly critical of the HBO Max spinoff, the actor isn’t alone in his assessment, as initial reviews of Peacemaker have been very positive. As with The Suicide Squad, which won critics over by sending up the self-serious superhero films that have saturated today’s Hollywood, reports to date have lauded Gunn for bringing that irreverence to the television format and breathing new life into a DCEU, the had trouble gaining a foothold at times. Footage released so far suggests the series will continue in the humorously violent vein of its parent film, but Cena has emphasized that family serves as a thematic thread as the show explores the background of its title character.
While the streaming series format is serving it well as the film industry grapples with a further surge in COVID cases, peacemaker didn’t come out of the pandemic entirely unscathed, as this week’s LA red carpet premiere was recently canceled. Luckily for superhero fans, this won’t delay the show’s release in any way, as all the footage required for Season 1 is already in the can. Given that this comes after another delay from Morbius for a rather sparse January, viewers will likely be excited when the DCEU show drops its first few episodes next week.
