Surgical Voluntary Nonprofit Operation Smile accepts crypto donations

On July 18, Operation Smile, one of the world’s largest nonprofit surgical volunteer organizations, announced that the group is now accepting donations for digital assets. Founded in 1982, the charity uses donations, volunteers, and public and private partnerships to improve the lives of people struggling with splitting diseases.

The announcement said that donations in cryptocurrency will help “strengthen Operation Smile’s mission to improve access to surgical care in underserved communities around the world so that patients can lead lives in better health and dignity.” .

The nonprofit also joins the growing list of well-known companies and nonprofits using crypto acceptance. Nonprofits like the Tony Hawk Foundation, The Skatepark Project, and Charitywater.org use donations with crypto assets.

“We believed the time was right to give cryptocurrency investors the opportunity to extend their generosity to the children and families we serve,” said Operation Smile Co-Founder and CEO Bill Magee. “The need for cleft surgery and ongoing care is significant in our world, but the compassion of these donors can fuel the innovation needed to help local health workers deliver world-class care to the most marginalized patients.”

Operation Smile uses The Giving Block to accept digital assets as tax deductible contributions. The Giving Block claims to have “developed a solution for bitcoin and cryptocurrency donations trusted by over 100 nonprofits, universities and religious organizations”. The announcement from the nonprofit surgical volunteer organization stated that the organization “is committed to providing patients with lasting health – being there to provide patients with additional surgeries, dentistry, mental health services, speech therapy, and other critical cleft treatments.” Currently, Operation Smile finds that more than five billion people worldwide do not have adequate access to timely and affordable surgical care.
